Lesson 1

Introduction: general test information

Reading section:

  • Types of questions
  • Developing a reading strategy
  • Model test - reading text 
  • answering the questions:
      • vocabulary
      • stating the main idea
      • inserting sentences into the passage
      • making inferences
      • finding references
      • listing major points
      • paraphrasing

Homework: practice exercises for reading (Barron’s Practice Exercises for the TOEFL)

Lesson 2
3 units

Review reading homework
Discuss questions and strategies

Speaking section: independent speaking

  • Addressing the question
  • developing the answer
  • practice questions (each student one question)

 

Homework: practice exercises (develop responses)

Lesson 3
3 units

Review homework

Listening

  • Types of listening problems
  • Listening for relevant information
  • Taking notes
  • Using visuals

 

Homework: additional listening practice exercises as required

Lesson 4
3 units

Review homework as required

Speaking section: integrated speaking

  • reading the short passage
  • listening to the talk
  • addressing the question
  • developing the answer
  • practice question (each student one question)

 

Homework: practice exercises (develop responses)

Lesson 5

Writing: independent essay

  • Types of questions
  • Planning the essay
  • Essay structure
  • Writing the essay

 

Homework: write an essay

Lesson 6

Individual lesson

  • Address problem areas and specific questions
  • Review essay
  • Supplemental material as required

 

Lesson 7

Writing: integrated essay

  • Applying reading and listening skills (lessons 1 and 3) to locate main ideas
  • Developing an outline / integrating information from the listening and readings passages
  • Writing the essay

 

Homework: Editing the essay

 

Lesson 8
3 units

Practice tests:

  • Reading: 1 text (20 minutes)

Correction and explanation

  • Listening short format (10 minute answer time)

Correction, review of audio text as necessary

  • Writing: Independent essay and integrated essay (writing time 50 minutes)

 

Lesson 9
2 units

Individual lesson

  • Review essays
  • Speaking practice test
  • Open issues/questions
